Amberley Castle is a medieval castle in Amberley, West Sussex, England. The castle was built in the 12th century and has been used as a residence, a prison, and a military base. It is now a popular tourist destination.
The history of Amberley Castle began with the construction of a timber-framed lodge in 1103 by Bishop Luffa of Chichester. This lodge was replaced by a stone hall in 1140, and an East Wing was added in 1200 by Bishop Seffrid II. The castle was significantly renovated and expanded in the 14th century and again in the 18th century.
Amberley Castle was used as a residence by several bishops of Chichester, as well as by the 15th Duke of Norfolk. It was also used as a prison during the English Civil War, and it was a military base during World War II.
