California Dreaming – Carmel-by-the-Sea

When many people think of California, they often think of the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles or the picturesque beauty of San Francisco. However, there is so much more to the state; Carmel-by-the-Sea is a hidden gem not far from San Francisco.

Carmel is easy to get around, the town itself only occupies one square mile but you can easily fill an entire day wandering from one fascinating shop to the next. The whimsical houses and shops are a mix of Swiss Alpine chalets and enchanted English cottages. The charming downtown area is filled with stone-paved passageways and flower-filled cozy courtyards.

Carmel is filled with art galleries, almost 100 of them, quaint boutique shops and tempting cafés and upsacle restaurants. The town has a European feel but with a relaxed Califonian twist. If you are a wine connoisseur, there are several wine tasting rooms where you can sample wines produced in the region or from around the world.

For a relaxing afternoon, visit the Camel Mission built by the Franciscan friars in 1770. Although it can be a little busy on the weekends, the gardens and courtyards offer a peaceful place to sit and admire the architecture. The Sunday Jazz Brunch at the Carmel Mission Ranch is always a treat.

For an incredible view of the sunset, walk west on Ocean Avenue all the way to the end of the street, and you will arrive at beautiful Carmel Beach. Bring a picnic from town, find a cozy spot on the beach, and watch the day end with a breathtaking sunset over the ocean.

There are many lodging options to choose from, ranging from the quaint to the luxurious.

Carmel is beautiful all year round but is less crowded from September through November, and the temperatures are the most amenable during this time of year.

The most efficient way to get to Carmel-by-the-Sea is to fly into the Monterrey Airport, as it is only 4.6 miles away. Better yet, fly into San Francisco or San Jose and drive the breathtaking Pacific Coast Highway down to Carmel.
