Cartagena: A Colorful Caribbean Destination Worth Exploring

We recently had the pleasure of visiting the enchanting city of Cartagena, Colombia.

The Old Walled City

One of the first things we did was explore the old walled city. Walking down the narrow streets and admiring the colorful colonial architecture was like stepping back in time. The buildings were all so beautiful and bursting with history. One of my favorite sights in the old city was the towering Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, a magnificent historic fort that loomed over the city. The views from the top were truly breathtaking and worth the climb.

Street Vendors

Of course, no city visit is complete without trying the local street food, and Cartagena did not disappoint. However, some street vendors can be a little aggressive at times. I found that saying “no, gracias” and continuing my way was the best way to handle them.

Beaches

Cartagena also boasts some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. The crystal-clear water was a perfect temperature; the soft, warm sand and brilliant sunshine made for a great day at the beach.

Churches

A must-visit place in Cartagena for a cultural and religious experience is the Cathedral Santa Catalina. The Cathedral Santa Catalina is a grand cathedral built in the 17th century. Its unique architecture is a mix of different styles and is a testament to the religious and cultural influence of Cartagena’s past. The interior is striking, with beautiful stained glass windows and artwork that depict the history of the church and the city. It offers a glimpse into the rich religious history of Cartagena and is worth a visit.

Urban Oasis

While the old walled city may be the main attraction for tourists, the newer urban area of Cartagena is equally fascinating and worth a visit. This area is home to modern buildings, bustling streets, and a thriving financial district. It’s fascinating to see how Cartagena has evolved and embraced modernization while retaining its rich cultural heritage. This area offers a more modern and upscale experience, with high-end restaurants, luxurious hotels, and top-notch shopping centers. You can go shopping at the Bocagrande Mall or dine in one of the many fancy restaurants while admiring the stunning views of the Caribbean Sea. Overall, the newer urban area of Cartagena is a great place to immerse yourself in the modern side of the city and experience a different side of Cartagena’s charm.

Port Oasis Wildlife Sanctuary

If you’re an animal lover looking for a dose of nature during your trip to Cartagena, make sure to include a visit to the Cartagena Port Oasis sanctuary on your itinerary! This sanctuary is home to a variety of rescued animals native to the region, including colorful toucans, fascinating iguanas, playful howler monkeys, and many other species. As you wander through the sanctuary, you’ll also be surrounded by an array of flora and fauna that’s native to this part of Colombia. And if you need a break from your explorations, there are a few stores and a cafĂ© on site that make for a pleasant stop. A visit to the Cartagena Port Oasis is both entertaining and educational and was a great addition to our trip.

A Great Place to Visit

In conclusion, Cartagena, Colombia, is a true gem of a city that should be on every traveler’s bucket list. Whether you’re wandering the walled old town, exploring historic forts, relaxing on pristine beaches, or meeting beautiful birds, there’s something for everyone in this stunning city.
