The Malecon boardwalk is a favorite spot for both locals and tourists alike. This waterfront walkway stretches for a mile and has shops, restaurants, and bars. You can find many street performers, live music and beautiful statues lining the boardwalk. We spent a lot of time at the Malecon and the surrounding area. Some great little flea market-type booths and a couple of nice restaurants on the island (also known as children’s island) sit in the middle of the river (take the stairs down from the middle of the bridge).
Be aware there are lots of street vendors on the Malecon offering everything from jewelry to trinkets and food. Most were not aggressive and will leave you alone if you simply say no thank you.
