For many years, the sugar industry was a crucial part of St Croix’s economy. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the island was one of the wealthiest sugar-producing regions in the world, with many plantations dotting the landscape. Today, visitors can learn about the island’s sugar-producing past by visiting the Estate Whim Plantation Museum, which offers guided tours of the plantation and a glimpse into the island’s rich history. The remains of sugar mills dot the landscape around the island; however, most are on private property, so you’ll have to view them from the road.

Some dishes to try include conch fritters, saltfish and fungi, johnnycake, and love and passion, a juice drink made with a blend of local fruits. Most restaurants on the island offer vegan options, allowing you to enjoy the varied and vibrant local flavors. We enjoyed Louie & Nacho’s; The food and the views were fabulous.
